South Sudanese singer Vivian Nyachan has died in the capital, Juba, following a short illness, her family has confirmed.
Nyachan, whose full name was Vivian James Chuai, died on Tuesday evening, 14 April 2026, at Gurei Medical Clinic. She was in her early 60s.
Her family described her passing as sudden, bringing to an end a music career that resonated deeply within communities across South Sudan and beyond.
A Cultural Voice for Peace in Times of Conflict
Hailing from Upper Nile State, Nyachan was widely recognised as one of the most influential grassroots musicians in South Sudan, known for using her music to promote peace, unity and social cohesion.
Her songs gained prominence during periods of conflict, when messages of restraint and reconciliation were in high demand.
She was best known for her widely circulated track “Look at Me”, which became associated with calls to protect civilians—including women, children, farmers and fishermen—amid instability.
Music Rooted in Tradition and Community
Nyachan performed primarily in the Chollo (Shilluk) language and Arabic, blending traditional folk elements with contemporary musical styles.
Her repertoire extended beyond peace advocacy, covering themes of love, cultural identity, women’s empowerment and spirituality.
Many of her performances were featured at community events and broadcast on local radio stations, helping her music reach audiences in both rural and urban areas.
Reaching the Diaspora Through Digital Platforms
In recent years, her work found wider audiences through informal digital distribution, particularly on platforms such as YouTube.
Songs including “Wadakona,” “Amara,” “Raj Piny,” and “Hakuma Ta Mara” were shared among South Sudanese communities at home and in the diaspora, further cementing her influence.

Following news of her death, tributes have been shared across social media, with fans and fellow musicians describing Nyachan as a powerful and unifying voice.
Many credited her music with providing comfort and hope during some of the country’s most challenging moments.
