Orengo and ODM Faction Rally for Justice for assaulted Senator Amid Luo Unity Test

By Clinton Owino  | Nairobi  | 14 April 2026

Siaya Governor James Orengo has taken up the legal defence of Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi following a violent assault in Kisumu, in a case that is intensifying scrutiny of political tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Mr Orengo said he would act as lead counsel for Mr Osotsi, who was attacked last week, describing the move as part of efforts to secure accountability for those responsible.

In a post on X, he said he had accompanied the senator, alongside Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, to record a statement with police in Nairobi.

“We are dedicated to pursuing full accountability for both the attackers and their sponsors. Justice will not be deterred by violence,” he said.

Attack in Kisumu

The incident occurred on 8 April in Kisumu, where Mr Osotsi was assaulted by a group of men at a barber shop in the city centre.

He sustained head and facial injuries and was later transferred to Nairobi for treatment.

The senator has linked the attack to his political stance, citing his opposition to President William Ruto’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid. He has called for the resignation of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, citing concerns over security.

Investigations under way

Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says three suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.

The agency described the assault as serious and confirmed that investigations are ongoing, including analysis of CCTV footage and witness statements.

Authorities say further arrests may follow.

Political fallout

The case comes at a time of visible divisions within ODM, one of Kenya’s main opposition parties.

Mr Osotsi is associated with a faction that has been critical of the government, while another wing of the party has taken a more conciliatory approach.

Those differences have played out in recent public rallies and statements, raising questions about party cohesion ahead of the next general election.

Mr Orengo and other leaders allied to Mr Osotsi have condemned the attack, warning against political violence and calling for an independent investigation.

Government officials have rejected claims of state involvement, with Mr Omollo saying security agencies are committed to addressing criminal activity regardless of political affiliation.

Wider implications

The developments are being closely watched in Nyanza, a region long considered a political stronghold of ODM.

Analysts say the handling of the case — both legally and politically — could shape perceptions of security, accountability and unity within the opposition.

For now, attention remains on the investigation and whether it will lead to prosecutions in a case that has drawn national attention.
